So Far In Pre-Season: Quarterbacks

This is more of a digest than a full article, as the first week is out of the way and there have been a mixture of expected and interesting scores. None of which we’re particularly interested in at this point.

However, a lot of QBs from starter to third string and beyond got some playtime under their belts. Let’s see how the starters and positional battles are shaping up…

Kyle Orton had a shocker of a debut, throwing three interceptions, but that might be for the best at this point. Jay Cutler also had a pick and didn’t look great either. Cutler has been the backbone of my fantasy team the last two seasons but I think I’ll be going a different direction this time.

Of the main competitions:

  • In Detroit, both Matthew Stafford and Duante Culpepper looked alright. I’m really curious how this will play out, and was thinking it might be settled by now. Looks like we’ll have to wait a few more weeks though. Personally I’m expecting Culpepper to start the regular season and Stafford to come in later.
  • Mark Sanchez looked pretty good for the Jets and will get the start this weekend. Clemens will get some time too though, so this is far from done. I think I’m leaning towards Sanchez here for now.
  • Sage Rosenfels outscored Tarvaris Jackson, and can probably count himself in ‘the lead’ here. Mind you, the Colts didn’t bring much to stop him. Next week against the Chiefs will prove a bit tougher. And yes, that did feel odd writing that.
  • For the Browns, Derek Anderson didn’t get much of a chance but Brady Quinn didn’t pull away either. We need to see more of both these guys.

  • Elsewhere a whole bunch of guys did well. In particular Trent Edwards, Matt Schaub, Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers looked great. Vince Young has looked good too… there’s a lot to ponder with just over 2 weeks left until our fantasy league draft.

Carson Palmer was getting back in the groove. Though he sprained his ankle during the game he said that his arm was fine. That’s good news for the Bengals (the arm I mean, not the ankle). The Bengals open week 2 at the Patriots this Thursday. The Pats have someone called Tom Brady playing, he looks quite useful.

Week 1 of pre-season isn’t the time to be panicking about anything but boy didn’t the Redskins look awkward? Jason Campbell goes into the last year of his rookie contract needing to do well. He can play, but like the entire team, he dropped off last season. I’d like to see him do well, and build over the next few seasons. But this wasn’t a great start. This week against the Steelers will be another stern test, even in pre-season. We should be better though.
