Brett Favre… Not Coming Back This Time
Aug 3rd
It was the beginning of June when I took my First Look at the NFC North and said this about Favre:
…that’s all I’ll talk about him until we get a “Yes” or “No” from the man. Sometime in late July, I guess.
So he’s a week late, but it does sound pretty final and I’m sticking with that assumption for now. Of course, I won’t be at all surprised to see him turning out in September.
The Vikes will have to go forward with Tavaris Jackson now, and as harsh as this seems based on a single player change, I’m moving the Vikings behind the Packers in the North. They were close in my mind, and Favre was the difference based on his 2009 play. Without him they will struggle, and nothing against T-Jack, but he’s younger and less experienced and won’t make things happen in the same way. It is still close though, and the Vikes still have a great defense and one of the best running games in the league. I’m still watching…

First Look 2010… NFC North
Jun 3rd
There are no easy divisions to predict but the NFC North is one of the toughest. Last year neither Graham or I saw the Vikings being as good as they turned out to be. Neither of us saw the North sending two teams into the post-season either but it turned out to be the case. Although we all called the Lions to prop up, the Bears were a disappointment and again caused us to get it wrong.
Let’s take an early look ahead to the 2010 NFL season…

More Free Agency Moves and Signings
Mar 15th
To start with we’re back to New York. Less than a week after releasing Thomas Jones (who has since signed with the Cheifs) the Jets have added LaDanian Tomlinson to the line-up. He’s got a fair deal to be a backup and although I think Jones was a better option, they’ve got LDT for a lot less than Jones was due. It would essentially be a crime not to use this as an excuse to post Electric Glide as unlike running backs that never gets old.
Carrying on with aging running backs, Larry Johnson is now a Redskin. He’s signed a surprisingly sensible 3 year deal that makes things interesting and has certainly improved the squad. If we can sort the line out, we might be able to actually make some yards now. Will Montgomery has resigned in this area.
Johnson has 2 years on Portis, but considerably less mileage. Hopefully he can contribute.

Vick? Favre? What’s Going On?
Aug 19th
Two very interesting – and in at least one case largely unexpected – signings have taken place this week with Michael Vick being signed up to by the Eagles and then with Brett Favre heading to the Vikings.
Brett Favre To Stay Retired

So it’s pretty bad form to say I called this… but I did, and I’m not too proud to point it out.
First Look… NFC North

Three teams had a big advantage last year, having the Lions in their division. The Lions, to give them a little credit, actually had some close inter-divisional games. Against the Vikings in particular, where they lost the two matchups by a total of only 6 points (two of those points were on the infamous Orlovsky safety… d’oh!)
